"Brother"                            Winner of 2009 Phippen Museum Foundation Award

The cowboy era supposedly ended generations ago, but it's influence continues to be just as strong on modern painters of cowboy life as it was nearly a century ago.

Watercolorist Mark Kohler has spent the last thirteen years traveling the American West, compiling images of working cowboys that he will use to portray this disappearing icon.  His soulful paintings exhibit the emotions he feels for his subjects.

"The modern working cowboy is representative of the values this country was founded upon.  They are proud, independent, strong-willed and self-sustaining.  I want to honor them by capturing their dignity."

"Only passion can explain or justify the cowboy ropin' for short pay, and fighting the elements, drought and whims of the cattle market year after year.  It's that strange something that gets inside a man.  How wonderful to wake up each morning and know what you're supposed to do....to be lost in the glory."
